The world of Tomino Yoshiyuki : An Innovator of Robot Anime. Gundam, Ideon, Dunbine, Reconguista in G, and more

With Robot anime based on the pillars of poetic justice and pure simplicity, Yoshiyuki Tomino is known as an innovator for inserting intriguing drama and a firm worldview into his work. Beginning with works that became large social phenomena such as Mobile suit Gundam (1979), G Reconguista (2014) and other Gundam Series, as well as other works like Space Runaway Ideon (1980) Combat Mecha Xabungle (1982), and Aura Battler Dunbine(1983) this exhibition inspects Tomino Yoshiyuki directed works that were not only known domestically and abroad for their animation quality, but also for their effect on contemporary popular culture.
After admiring the stars as a boy and aspiring to become a film maker in his youth, Tomino made his debut in 1964 making storyboards for Astro Boy. He would go on to work a long career of 55 years, releasing numerous anime productions for the world to see. By displaying Tomino’s works including handwritten notes, sketches and storyboards that would become the blueprints for anime, character and mechanical designs, directions for art corrections, and more, you can see what kind of world and drama he was making, as well as discover the appeal of the busy creation process.
The exhibition also introduces original images including animation cel sheets used in production and important illustrations done by creators that worked along Tomino to help complete the anime series such as Yasuhiko Yoshikazu, Kogawa Tomonori, Okawara Kunio, Nakamura Mitsuki, and Nagano Mamori.
